If you know any Mac users (or are one yourself), then you’re probably familiar with the notification program called Growl. Simply put, this application lets you know when things happen on your computer whether that’s a file that finished downloading, a friend that shows up online, or a new email arriving. Growl-enabled applications can also use the system to display their notifications and you can configure which ones you want to see. The beauty of the app is its consistency – instead of having each program alerting you in its own way and using its own UI, Growl centralizes the notifications and keeps them consistent.
Now there’s a beta of this popular program being developed for Windows PCs: Growl for Windows. The software lets you configure all sorts of settings, including how and when notifications display, what they should look like, whether you want to see summaries of those you missed while you were away, what sounds should play, and a lot more.
To gain access to system notifications, the developers of Growl for Windows have created a program called System Monitor that can provide alerts for events like low disk space, event log entries, network connection status, battery status, USB device status, and a (configurable) ping host failure.
You can download Growl for Windows here (zip file) and applications supported are available here.
Plus, be sure to check out Prowl, the new iPhone client that works with Growl for Windows.
