I Switched from Del.icio.us to Ma.gnolia

Sarah Perez on January 16th, 2008

magnolia If you’re a subscriber to the feed, you may have noticed that I’ve shifted from including my del.icio.us links in the feed to including Ma.gnolia links instead. This is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now. Although both sites are great at online bookmarking, which allows you to save, share, and tag your favorite links, I really like the visual appeal of Ma.gnolia. Not only is Ma.gnolia’s site more attractive, so are the links that are spliced into my feed (via FeedBurner, of course). Ma.gnolia also offers a few features that del.icio.us doesn’t - like the ability to rate your bookmarks with a star rating, making note of when a bookmark was saved, & privacy features to mark certain bookmarks as only visible to you. Plus, Ma.gnolia is more of a community, having built a social network site around bookmarking. At del.icio.us, you can add others to your network, but at Ma.gnolia you can build a profile and join groups built around your interests. There are Ma.nolia bookmarklets to use, of course, and a Firefox add-on too. I’m curious what bookmarking services you use and why you chose them…let me know in the comments!

  1. I use Google Bookmarks. Because I am Google’s Bitch, mainly. I like it, and I since I make heavy use of the Google Toolbar for Firefox, it just fits with the way I surf.

I tried del.icio.us and just could not get the feel for it. I’ll look at this ma.gnolia business, see if I like it. Young minds, fresh ideas. I need to be more tolerant and willing to change!

  2. I use Furl (http://www.furl.net/) and Google Notebook (http://www.google.com/notebook). Furl gives me a short snip and the link. GNotebook gives me an entire article along with the images.

Both can be displayed as blog widgets if desired.

  3. Thanks very much for joining, Sarah, and for the great post about what you like about how we’ve built Ma.gnolia. We’re glad to have you with us, and if you ever have trouble or suggestions for the service, just drop us a line to let us know.

  4. I never got into Google Notebook for some reason…but I may have to check out furl. :)

  5. I use Simpy, obviously ( http://simpy.com ). Ma.gnolia is nice. del.icio.us seems like it’s not getting enough love from Y!. Furl is slooooooooooooow (and about to be sold).

Next week, I’ll post a review of all social bookmarking services and hints about their future on the Simpy blog - htt://blog.simpy.com and I’ll be looking for people’s feedback and thoughts.

    Oh, why use Simpy:

    - search (that’s how I get to my previously saved bookmarks) - it’s fast and accurate and searches your tags, bookmark titles, bookmark notes, etc.

    - search refining / drilling in via Related Tags feature

    - tag completion (limits the noise of only slightly different but really the same tags)

    - Groups - I’m a member of several Simpy Groups and use them to share bookmarks with other similar people - both give and take :)
    - I can keep some books private, some public, and I can also share with Group members even while keeping them private, which is nice for sharing with a limited group of friends/colleagues.

    - I HateTags_like_this - tags are nice and natural, multi-word and comma-separated, unlike on del.icio.us

    - Good Firefox integration via 2 FF plugins, on of which is nice and simple and doesn’t use up more of my browser screen space and the other one that is very powerful and essentially syncs your browser bookmarks with Simpy.

    - There is more…

  6. not to diss on simpy, but all the bullets that otis mentions in the previous comment can also be said about ma.gnolia.

    i, too, am a del.icio.us -> ma.gnolia convert.

  7. I just signed up for magnolia. It looks like it’s pretty decent. I’ll give it a try.

  8. So far, ma.gnolia is pretty cool! thanks for all the feedback!

  9. Sarah — thanks for this post! I was wondering why you switched, and your post + comments helped me compare the services.

I like the way Furl saves a copy of the page you’re linking to — but it looks like ma.gnolia does, too, although with some caveats. I like the way ma.gnolia displays your description and/or clippings in your list — it’s a click away in Furl. I think ma.gnolia is better organized visually than del.icio.us.

  10. I’m sticking with del.icio.us because of the simplicity. I don’t want it to be yet another social network.

You say it doesn’t record the date/time when you saved the bookmark and allow you to hide bookmarks from public view — but it does.

  11. I think its worth noting that you can easily import your BMs from your delicious account into magnolia too here:
    http://ma.gnolia.com/import/delicious

Neato. Just imported and am going to give it a try. Dev seems to have stopped somewhat on delicious and its always looked crap!

I’d be interested to know if anybody uses the Wordpress plugin Postalicious (for Magnolia):http://neop.gbtopia.com/?p=108

What I like about Delicious (and you CAN reach it via delicious.com!)is there is a built in function that posts all your daily links in one post to your blog.

    Anyway….thanks for the tip Sarah.

  12. Adrian,

I use Feedburner to insert my magnolia links into my feed, but, nope, not the plugin.
