According to today’s blog post on the Official Gmail Blog, there is a new feature in Gmail: colored labels! With the ability to assign colors to different types of email, it’s easier to see, at a glance, what’s in your inbox. This is a feature that I find really useful in Outlook 2007, which I use heavily at work…it’s gotten to the point that a quick look at the colors in my inbox can tell me exactly what kind of day I’m going to have. And now, I’ll have that same ability in my Gmail! That is, if the feature would hurry up and appear already. I hate when I know a new feature is coming and I don’t have it yet. I tried logging out and back in, which apparently works for some, but no luck yet. I guess I will just have to wait.

Hi Sarah, Yes, I did get them tonight and they are actually very handy if you get tons of email and have to categorize it with many labels. I work part time in tech support and we use Gmail to answer all the incoming emails. I think we’ll be happy with this new feature.
Would be much more interesting/useful to label contacts, not only messages. Labelling all work-related contacts would mark all work related mail with one label & color. There’s no other way to do that. Contact groups are not that useful. What do you think?

Ah Ha! I may have been looking in the wrong place (edit labels page) They are editable on the Gmail main page on the left column on the right of the label is a drop down where the user can select the label.

@Andrisi: Well, you could set up a filter that said if mail comes in from these email addresses (people from work) it’s given a label of “work,” then you could have that label associated with a color…how about that?
@Sarah: Of course, it’s a solution – but not that elegant, as Gmail itself. And then you should rerun filters every time, you add someone to a group, and also groups will be too large or you’ll have a lot of rules.
Hi there. I have seen the colored labels working on my friends’ gmail but I haven’t got mine working… I used my friends computer + browser to get through my gmail and hopefully see my gmail updated, but no luck. Gmail will load his mailbox with colored labels and mine doesn’t
… I really use labels and I’d really like to have these labels… GOOOOGLE!!! PLEASE HELP! ….. ok. anyone of you guys know where to contact google tech guys for this problem pleeease

Same here. The new labels work in my boyfriend’s and not in my gmail account. And it’s been weeks when he got his update and still nothing on mine.
Very jealous and very angry at Google! How hard can it be updating about a (or 2 or 3) million gmail accounts???
