I love my Blackberry Pearl – it’s great to have the power of a Blackberry in such a small form factor. However, I did just run into one annoying issue lately and I wanted to share it in case any of you run into it yourself. Apparently, if you don’t have a habit of rebooting your phone often (I don’t), then your Blackberry can run out of memory. Emails, browser cache, cookies, ringtones, photos, video, text messages, and call logs can all take up the Blackberry’s memory. Now, considering that list, if you were a software designer, what would you choose to erase first from the phone to free up memory? Browser cache, perhaps? Cookies? Nope, the Blackberry deleted my call log. Nice. The fix was easy enough — remove the battery and put it back in; and to keep the problem from happening in the future, turning on the auto reset feature is key. To access this feature, go into your Options, then choose the Auto On/Off option, set both the weekday and weekend option to "enabled" at the time of your choosing. Poor design? Yes, but at least there’s a workaround.

  1. bill says:

Available memory on Blackberries has absolutely nothing to do with rebooting the device. Second resetting by pulling the battery doesn’t delete data and certainly doesn’t delete the brower cache. Third the Pearl not only has the most available memory compared to other models it can also take a 2GB microSD which only the new 8800 matches. If you don’t want to buy the expanded memory then turn down the amount of memory that the device reserves for media. To do that follow this link:

    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc.....%205262706

  2. Tyler says:

Wow. Talk about principle of least surprise. Or the blackberry has sadistic developers, which, let’s face it, aren’t the rarest of birds.

  3. TheMadAdmin says:

The real issue is the blackberries will loose memory while working. Many third party apps have memory leaks and sometimes the device needs to be reset.

We use the Blackberry Enterprise Server and it lets the BB drop email off the device when memory becomes an issue and it seems to keep the call log. But maybe that is just when used with Bes.

The 8800 is the grown up brother of the pearl and I saw this device a couple of weeks ago and it is nice. Screen and the roller ball make working with it very nice.

Also high speed internet and a quick hand held make using the internet almost bearable on this phone, though the browser still isn’t the best.

But when it comes to getting messages and phone wrapped in to on device these new blackberries are the best. We have Treos and Pocket PC devices running Good Link and if you want to talk about unstable devices, man these crash if you look at them funny.

add to the the dst PATCH from microsoft that screwed up services on both Good and Blackberry devices because they rolled security patches into the DST patch that prevented the BES and Good Servers from being able to send messages “As someone” else. I.e. my BB couldn’t send and have the message go out through the exchange server because BES is not me in outlook.

Sorry long week working on this crap.

I had the same issue. Deleted all my text messages and my call log…..Not sure what did it.

  5. Ms.Bozzy says:

Man- this whole deal with the missing call log is making my head spin. I have had the pearl for about six month and recently encountered the whole call log missing issues. I work in sales and it is pertinent that I know who’s calls I am missing. The call log was working wonderfully for some time and one day, the log just dissappeared on me. Sometimes I come out of the shower and there will be a message on the screen stating that I have a missed call. The option “view” will be selected and when I click on the pearl/trackball to view, no number shows up. This is really annoying. I just started researching this issue hard core the last few hours – and man, there is a whole mountain of sites and comments about this problem on the WWW. As I am typing this I am waiting for the RIM upgrade software to download (BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2.0.75 (Bundle 75)). Not sure if this will fix my problem or not. Additionally, I am trying all the other little fixes, such as changing the media memory requirement settings and setting the auto-on/off functionality, etc.

After doing all this, I will see how the sweet Pearl will behave….I’ll keep you all posted.

  6. Pete Pete says:

Check out the RIM forum at http://www.howardforums.com. This is a common memory leak issue for the Pearl. There is a little applet that you can install that will let you restart the BB without you needing to pull out the battery. The newer BB firmware (Cingular version) does not have this issue.

i have a blackberry pearl and took out the battery while it was turn on now it wont do nothing the screen is still white and pissing me off please if any one know how to reset this or fix it please let me know thanks

  8. Sana says:

Hey guys i m encountering with the same problem of missing call logs and text messages and it is really annoying,a BB of this quality cant even store a dozen messages sometimes, plz help me guys,i m sick of this problem

  9. Nikki says:

Hey, for me just taking out the battery and putting in back in did free up a lot of space on the device. I hope now it does not clear up my call logs. That is very frustrating. Thanks you guys.

  10. JJ says:

I understand the issue everybody is having, but I just want to MAKE THE CALL LIST LONGER!

I used to use a Windows Mobile device and it held weeks worth of call list data, which I used all the time. Now I can’t see a call I made in the morning, by the early afternoon.

How do I lengthen the call list? I want it to hold hundreds of numbers. Thanks.

  11. Franny says:

I too encountered this same issue, and was more than midly frustrated. I called the t-mobile service reps for help. The guy actually admitted to a misstep on the part of the RIM people, and directed me how to keep my call log long and flowing. It is definitely a memory issue. I had to basically deplete the amount of memory that my media(photos, music, etc) took up and transfer that memory for the better purposes of a longer call log. To increase your call log, go into your media folder, and click options. Change your device memory limit to 12m, and your reserved pictures memory to 5m. Reboot your phone, and you’ll see immediate results. However, without an additional memory card, you will start to notice that your photographs aren’t viewable because although you can take a picture or load a file, there is not enough memory available to actually keep more than the file name.

  12. claire says:

i’ve had my pearl for about 3 weeks and am having the same problem (call and sms texts)

my SMS Text inbox is apparently a master inbox for both of my other email accounts. this is very aggrivating, as i’d like to keep my texts, and email accounts properly categorized.

does anyone know how to do this? and/or has anyone solved the mysteriously disappearing text message problem?

i’m considering turning this thing in for an iphone…

  13. Jackie says:

I’ve had the same problem several times. Unfortunately T-Mobile/BB Support always responds with the generic “delete some pictures”…

So I have repeatedly moved all my pics off, rebooted my phone, rinse and repeat, with little (sometimes call log will begin working for a few days) or no difference.

What I have found is that removing the battery DOES work… Checked my memory allocation (for files) under Options, Status, and saw that I had zero File Free. Shut down phone, removed battery for a couple minutes, popped back in and voila! Lots o’free memory! :D

I’ve also set up the auto reboot daily, just to help keep those pesky apps with memory leaks in line.

BTW: The Pearl is a great phone. Soooo much better than all those Treo’s I’ve burned through and suffered with over the years!

  14. Who Kares says:

Okay I have been reading everyone’s problem. Mmmmmm let see I am having call log deletion problem as well but addition to that now all my incoming and out going calls appears in messages file also. Anyone knows what to do? Thanks.

  15. Lazzer says:

Hi Who Kares, If you select the call log, then options. Select ‘Call Logging’ then change the option to ‘None’.

This rather misleading option is where I lookd when having the call log dissappearing issue – but it’s purpose is to log calls in you message list, not the call log.

    Hope this helps.

    Lazzer

  16. I’m the IT Manager and Administrator for a Mobile Telecoms solution provider and have previously been a die hard devotee of Windows Mobile 5 and 6…

Having used a Pearl for the last 10 months, there’s no way I could go back.

Get that Firmware upgraded (I use Rogers 4.2.1.94) and all those little problems make like an early revision Pearl call log and disappear…

    Nice site btw :o )

  17. Jed says:

I ran into this same memory issue, except with a slightly worse symptom. My Pearl was deleting new texts as they arrived. I could see the message show up, but it would be immediately deleted. Who in their mind thought that was a good idea?

Anyway, a call to the Cingular rep resulted in a long list of things you can do to free up more memory on your Blackberry. I’ve listed them here:
    http://www.jedfonner.com/2007/.....ing-issue/

  18. Anita says:

I just had this issue with the call logs and all my text messages disappearing, i am so upset because i got a great job offer and as soon as i was about to add the phone number to my address book all the text and call logs disappeared, and i don’t know how to contact them again cause the text all the info i needed for the job to me.Is there anyway to get the old messages back on my phone? Please help this is frustrating.

  19. tracy says:

Im having the same problem as everyone else with my call log and text. i went into my call log hit menu and selcted options then select call logging it gives you the choice to have your call log in your messages list select all or missed and the calls will appear in your message box. A temp fix for lost call log but im still working on lost messages. I’ll let you know later when i figure something out!

  20. waynep says:

It’s a memory leak issue. I would suggest doing the following here:
    http://blackberrysync.com/arch.....-firmware/
I did for 2 phones and the issue has gone away.

  21. RedDevl says:

Hmmmmm, the memory leak issue seems to be for the older firmware berrys…. but my Ruby did the whole “call list & sms messages deletion” thing and its ONLY 3 days old….. i’m pretty upset about this. T-Mo’s website shows the s/w upgrade version to be the same as whats in my phone. Suggestions/ideas? Perhaps getting a 1 or 2GB card would be wise??

  22. [...] first post regarding the issues I had with the disappearing call logs on the Blackberry Pearl received a lot attention. It also finally gave me a real solution. Thanks [...]

  23. EM says:

I honestly think I am going to return this phone. I’ve had the pearl for about 1 month now and everyday I find a new reason to hate it. I have the ‘call-log disappearing’ act going on and have already removed the battery, fixed the memory space, and still have no way of seeing my missed calls. When others say there is a “fix” I wonder if they mean they were able to retrieve recent missed calls or just were able to see missed calls going forward from removing the battery?

  24. [...] problem with my BB Peal deleting my call log and text inbox/outbox every couple fuckin’ days? The Disappearing Call Log on the Blackberry Pearl | sarahintampa Looked it up for the bff a few days [...]

  25. tenferre says:

well guys, i already aim my BB Pearl a couple times to the wall, and allways hope “not this time yet, somebody will find a reason and a solution for this to happen”, but its really annoying this call log to disapear, when i use it as a time reference at the end of the day on my reports (and its clean, completly empty), i tryed the “firmware” but i cant get to the site (its all black), another thing is the track ball, in the first month i had to dismount it and clean it five times (like the old mouse ball cleaning process), but the most annoying was when i had 5 e-mail accounts and they syncronize with server all the time, sometimes i need make phone call and the phone was just too buzy or i need to hangup and it was buzy doing the download of messages, the solution was clear all hotmail e-mails except the sprint one and keept G-mail seperated as an application. Other thing is cant see video on the net or see pics on some web pages, for the service that we pay should be possible all this.

  26. Thanks for this post. I just ran into that issue today with my Pearl and was puzzled.
Thanks again – your post truly simplified my troubleshooting process.

  27. Claudia m. says:

Tmobile rep said that my call log was being deleted cause I had too many programs running say one time so it causes the BB to use. Too much memory so what he said to do and worked for me was press the menu button the one with the dots scroll to switch application and that will show all the apps you have running select each icon one at a time and hit your go back arrow till it closes that app or till you are your desk top then go to the next one and do the same to allyhe icons that appear some will not close cause they always need to be running like your message one and your browser one will stay open that once all the extra apps have been closed your call log should appear again

  28. Chuck says:

I have the LATEST software for Pearl, just bought 4 weeks ago, and it has ALL THE PROBLEMS you guys had in summer of 2007. Well, EM & Tenferre, I agree 100%. I’m just waiting 3 months now so my contract will be over & will either get another Sprint phone, or get an iPhone. I already wasted 6 or 7 hours trying to get mac to sync with this thing, and can’t even begin to name all the other problems the phone has had. Definitely the most frustrating phone I’ve ever owned in 15 years of mobile experience.

  29. When help is in need... says:

Hey this solution works great, my friend needed help with her blackberry and called me as a tech spec and totally helped her over the phone without even seeing the phone physically. You rock!

  30. Joe says:

Delete the sample video. That should free up 5Mb if I recall correctly.

    Delete any unused langauges.

Set the memory limit for media to the minimum 12mb I believe. Then set it to use the SD card if you have one to store pictures etc.

I fixed this issue on my friends CDMA Pearl with the above steps and I upgraded his phone SW to the latest svailable version.

I went even further and deleted blackberry maps but that should be unnecessary.

He never goes below 20Mb on file free under options->status. He never loses any data any more

    Joe

  31. Amanda says:

Hey, my pearl was having the same problems last night and today, was deleting all my messages and call log, and it was deleting messages before i even got to see them, but then i read on a site to hold down the left bottom corner button, the one with the up and down arrows on it and while holding it push L5L5 and then hit your menu button and clear log, this is all the cookies and stuff that destroys your memory. Once i did this my messaging worked fine instantly after i deleted it. Try it, i hope it helps.
