New Gmail Features Coming Soon?

According to this article at ZDNet, Gmail users will be getting a couple new features in the near future. The first one will be a link in your spam folder that allows you, with one click, to delete all your spam messages at once. I will certainly enjoy that feature! Although I know that my spam emails are automatically deleted once they are 30 days old, there is this email "neat freak" in me that wants everything organized and emptied. The second new feature is the ability to apply new filters not only to incoming mail, as you can now, but also to mail that is currently in your mailbox. Now this is extremely useful! I never understood how Gmail could have the ability to "test your filter" during the creation process, pulling up the messages the filter would apply to, but not give you the chance to apply that filter to those same messages. This feature will certainly save me tons of time when I’m organizing and labeling my email.

The features have just been discovered in the Gmail code, but no word yet on when we’ll see them in our mailboxes. Anyone have them yet? Keep your eyes peeled!

  1. I’ve had these features for a week or so. I also had the chat feature a week before my friends. I must be on the good server.

  2. I have does features in my oldest account and they work well.

  3. I have had the spam delete thing for a few days now…quite useful for the amount I get.

  4. Man, I still don’t have them! You guys are lucky! :)

  5. I’ve just noticed I have the new spam delete feature; no sign of the new filter option yet. The spam feature does not really save me any time - I was expecting to eliminate one click. I used to use one click to “select all” and a second click to “delete forever”. The new feature does not require you to select but when you click on “Delete all spam now”, it brings up a dialog box that asks “Are you sure you want to continue?” as if you might change your mind at the last second and decide to keep those pharmaceutical offers! So, while it’s not such a big deal to have to do 2 clicks, when you get a new feature, your hope is that it’s going to be an improvement - in this case delete with one click.

I’m still looking forward to the improved filter feature; surely that will be an productivity improvement. (Don’t call me Shirley…)
