The Dell De-Gunker

DellI just found a great tech tool that I’ll have to add to my collection; it’s called the Dell De-Crapifier. Despite it’s somewhat naughty name, this tool is a godsend. Its function? To remove all the unneccessary programs, like trial versions of software, that come pre-installed on you
r Dell OEM computer. Yes - all the stuff that you spend forever removing one by one can now be uninstalled all at once! The current version of the tool removes the following:

  • QuickBooks Trial
  • NetZero Installers
  • Earthlink Setup Files
  • Corel Photo Album 6
  • McAffee Personal Firewall
  • McAffee SpamKiller
  • McAffee VirusScan Online
  • McAffee Security Center
  • Google Desktop
  • Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
  • America Online 9.0
  • Musicmatch Jukebox
  • Musicmatch Music Services

Run Registry Keys:
o “BuildBU” - Part of Dell Alerts which provides customers with an update on latest updates. Can be run manually as needed
o “DVDLauncher” - Belongs to the Cyberlink PowerCinema video viewing software which allows you to play DVDs on insertation. This program is a non-essential process, and is installed for ease of use.
o “ISUSPM Startup” and “ISUSScheduler” - InstallShield Update Service Scheduler. Automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software. Can be run manually.
o “msci” - Used for McAffee Security Center
o “MSKDetectorExe” - Part of McAfee Spamkiller
o “QBReminderFlash” - QuickBooks
o “QuickTime Task” - Tray icon that you can use for quick access to the QuickTime application and additional settings. Can be run manually.
o “RealTray” - Tray icon that you can use for quick access to the Real Player application and additional settings. Can be run manually.
o “SunJavaUpdateSched” - Updater for the Java Runtime Envronment. Can be run manually
o “DellSupport” - Agent that offers additional support and update features for your Dell computer or laptop. Can be run manually.

  1. New Laptop - Why do

New Laptop - Why do factory installations suck

  2. Since I reformat and reinstall anyway, this is unnecessary but for those who don’t it’s a great tool.

It’s too bad it’s become necessary. Now all we need are similar tools for PCs from HP/Compaq, Gateway, Sony, eMachines and just about anybody else I can think of..
