Napster Goes Free

Napster is now offering free music. Well, to be precise, they’re offering a free trial of their services. This free trial makes every track in their 2,000,000 song catalog up to 5 times for free. After the 5th free play of any single track, you can either purchase the track or become a Napster subscriber. Probably a good move on their part, as online users are 6 times more likely to convert into paid subscribers. I’m still a fan of iTunes, though. What’s your favorite download service?

  1. I use Yahoo Music Engine (with the Unlimited subscription)and iTunes. Yahoo Music Engine is still a bit buggy and is missing some big features that iTunes has like Smart Playlists. I like the Yahoo Unlimited subscription, it’s cheaper than Rhapsody and Napster. I use it to test drive music before I go out and buy them, it’s also a great way to discover new music. But iTunes is still my main music app for my permanent collection.

  2. I’m a fan of iTMS, though I’ve never actually used iTunes itself. SharpMusique is a decent interface, and I don’t have to worry about any annoying DRM.

I haven’t tried Rhapsody, which on Linux is basically pay-for-streaming, of which I don’t entirely get the point anyway.
