New Feature: Gmail Chats
![]()
Did you notice a new link in your Gmail today? Gmail Chats is a new feature that has just been added to the Gmail web email service. You don’t need to download any software in order for this to work. You will soon see a new list of contacts, called "Quick Contacts" (anyone seeing this already?), and clicking on these contacts will start an IM session. The IM sessions will then open up in the browser, and both IE and Firefox are supported, with other browser support coming soon. For voice chats, you will still need to use the Google Talk application. This is EXTREMELY cool.
By the way, if you still don’t have a Gmail account, comment here and I will give you one!

I noticed that yesterday, looks pretty cool, though I’m still kind of green to Google Talk. One of the guys who built Gaim left to work for Google to help them build cross-platform IM tools, so perhaps I have something to look forward to now.
Gaim-vv is supposed to interface with Google/Yahoo/MSN voice and video, but it hasn’t made its way into the stable source tree yet. Perhaps in Gaim 3.0.
I’d be pleased to be able to have a Gmail account.
I think GTalk failed, so this is an attempt to relaunch it.
Gtalk is my favorite IM client, and when they finally add AIM integration, I’ll love it for sure.
GMail chats will be sweet. I’ve heard of some people having the “Quick Contacts” and being able to chat already, but I don’t have it.
Thanks for all the info!
Hi Sarah, strange thing. I’ve got Gchat at work but when I use Gmail at home, the Gchat isn’t visible.
By the way, I saw your chat icon while I was checking mail at lunch time. You were marked busy, so I didn’t bother you. LOL
