A build of the IE 7 browser has been leaked to the net. You can download it here. Let’s see what they’ve got brewing so far!

Update: that link has been taken down! Read the comments for alternate links!

Trouble getting it to work?

Try this:

# Extract IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe to a temporary folder.
# Working within’ the extracted directory, delete the following:

    * update\
    * install.ins
    * spmsg.dll
    * spuninst.exe
    * spupdsvc.exe

# Create a blank text file within’ the directory and rename it to iexplore.exe.local.
# Move the directory to a location in which you want to store the now standalone version of Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1 (eg. My Documents).
# Execute iexplore.exe.

  1. ooh! The screen prints look cool! Have you tried it? How’s it working?

  2. oops! the link is down :\

  3. K - Another link: http://www.fluxiontech.com/?p=130

    S - Buggy! but worth the peek!

  4. Looks just like IE on Windows Vista that I’ve been running on my desktop.

  5. You sure about this one? Those download sites look pretty sketchy…

  6. Even if I could download a pre-release version from a known reputable site, I’d be inclined not to, unless I had a test machine to put it on. IE6 is so buggy, I can’t imagine unleashing an unapproved version on to my regular computer!

    Would love to hear more about it from somebody who has tried it, but I sure hope nobody messes up their computer trying it out!

  7. Why not use firefox or mozilla instead of IE?

  8. Of course I use Firefox and will continue to do so! But who can resist a sneak peek? If you didn’t download the beta when I posted this, then you missed out because Microsoft made them take it down.

    So, yeah, it was a little buggy, but it had some nice features. Nothing Firefox can’t do though! IE 7 is MS’s attempt to play catch-up to Firefox, but for those of us that switched, I doubt we will go back. Still IE desparately needed updating and I’m glad they are doing it. I put a couple of screenshots up on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarahintampa/89381615/in/photostream/). Sorry about the quality. I need a screenshot-taking program…Ctrl + Prnt Screen blows!

  9. I’ve had it on my system for a couple of months (thanks MSDN!) and can say that it is buggy as heck. My command for “pskill iexplore” never leaves my Run history it’s so buggy.

    Pretty much the only things I use IE for is to get into my work’s Outlook Web Access and to hit support.microsoft.com when needed. Otherwise, Firefox FTW.

  10. I, too, changed over to FireFox a long time ago. Not surprised at all to hear from you that IE7 is still playing catchup with FF. Can’t imagine ever going back to IE.

  11. I like how it looks and love the tab option but it seems very slow to me. Maybe I’m just too hooked on Firefox.
