Google Groups: Is This a New Feature?

I was just visiting the Google Groups page, and I noticed that not only were my groups and my recently visited groups listed, there was also a list of "Suggested Groups." How long has that been there? I never even noticed it before! That was really handy. Reminds me of Amazon’s suggestions — a feature I really like. Someone let me know how long I’ve been missing out on this!

  1. Collaborative filtering is one feature that’s not used nearly enough on the web. If there was a reliable way to train a suggestion engine in a decentralized way (a la TiVo’s suggestions) CF could be a new way to attack searching, surfing, browsing, blogging, etc. Someone at USF wrote their dissertation on it. It’s long. Haven’t read it yet.

  2. I saw that new feature about a month ago when I was helping someone who runs a Google group (on my recommend. Oiy!) to find an easy way to help users sign up for the e-mail list.

I hope they spend a little time on it. Over on FoRK, Rohit’s Khare’s discussion list, someone pointed out that Google has really let Groups go since it’s just not fitting into their strategy — as it’s evolved anyway.

  3. it’s at least one month old. You should have seen it when I sent you the Google Is Awesome group links

  4. They also added adult content. I’m not sure how recent that was.
