Google Secure Access

Sarah Perez on September 20th, 2005

Google_2I almost don’t want to blog about this because I happen to like all the free and open wireless networks out there, but those guys probably aren’t reading my blog anyway. Google is now offering Secure Access, which is a downloadable client application that allows users to establish a more secure Wi-Fi connection. It works by connecting to a Google VPN server that is provided for this service. A handy tool if you don’t know how to configure a router and your NIC. Is anyone using this? I’m wondering if you take a hit on speed.

  1. I’m guessing that this isn’t meant for use on a home network (or any wifi connection with 128-bit encryption) but could be useful when connecting to an unsecure wifi access point like in a coffee shop.

  2. I think it’s only available in the San Fran area right now.

I don’t know how I feel about using google to secure my wifi. There are plenty ways to secure your wifi and manage it yourself, tossing your information to google just seems suspicious to me.

I think if some people are worried about the security of their network, then perhaps they should learn about network security.

  3. I have an unsecure WiFi network :D

  4. Congratulations on your recent local publicity!

  5. It seems like another enabler for those who are either too lazy or too ignorant to learn how to do things right on their computers. The same people who open an email with the subject “Important!” from an uknown sender are the (IMHO) target for this product.
For pete’s sake, it takes 5 frickin minutes to setup WEP on a wireless router/AP. And one more minute to give your computer access to that AP.
