Flickr’s New Competition?

Sarah Perez on September 1st, 2005

SlideDoes Flickr have a new competitor? Perhaps. Slide is a new photo-sharing software program from PayPal co-founder Max Levchin. The service lets members swap photo albums and create desktop slideshows.  The idea behind Slide is to combine aspects of social networking, photo sharing, Web syndication and e-commerce. There is a downloadable desktop program that indexes all the photos on your hard drive and creates a slide show at the edge of the screen. In this aspect, it reminds me of Google’s Picassa software. Like the Gmail beta, Slide is currently invite-only. However, you can send an email to inviteme@slide.com to ask for an invite. I’ll let you know if I get one. If so, you can get one from me!

  1. You know it’s a shame that Yahoo! bought Flickr and not Google, because the combination of Flickr and Picasa would have been very very cool.

  2. Just downloaded the program and its pretty sweet. It’s indexing my images now… I kind of wish the Google Desktop Slideshow looked more like this.

Using it as a broadcast base for images is a pretty cool idea as well. I’ll be following this closely! Good find.

First off, credit goes to SarahinTampa dotCom for finding this great program. Slide is billed as a photo sharing program but is actually what I would call a Photo Aggregator. Rather than reading RSS feeds to produce news style syndicat…
