Another Needed Gmail Feature

Sarah Perez on June 12th, 2005

Gmail_6In addition to a "Trash" button, it would be nice to have a way to export your contacts. Or so thinks Jason Calacanis. He discovered that the only way to get this done now is to: a) cut and paste list to EXCEL and save as CSV or b) Download the GMAIL Address Book Exporter (a 3rd party tool).

PcwlogoIn PCWorld’s latest issue, there is an article: "30 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do on the Internet." Unfortunately, I did know you could do a lot of those things or I didn’t care (parenting advise, charter a private jet, virtual high school). However, that’s not to say there weren’t any gems. I’m going to check out the following:

SwapThing.com: Swap things online
Konfabulator: For those of us with Mac OS envy, we can get widgets of our own
GoogleX Interface: Speaking of Macs, this interface is so cool

And although I knew of this one, Streamload.com, I have yet to use it; but thanks to the article I was reminded to get uploading already!

Kevin Rose’s New Show

Sarah Perez on June 4th, 2005

29912_lKevin Rose, a (former) co-host of "Attack of the Show" (formerly, "The Screen Savers") on G4 (formerly TechTV), is leaving the show to concentrate on a new technology how-to show called Systm. Systm will be an internet-only show distributed free in many formats. I downloaded the Windows Media format via BitTorrent. I watched the first episode, and it’s not bad. He shows you how to do "war driving" to find unencrypted webcams. Not that I’m going to do that, but it was interesting viewing. At least it’s in-depth tech programming - something G4 doesn’t really offer anymore. Speaking of which, how lame is G4 now? I mean, "Attack of the Show"?! Are they frickin’ kidding me? I understand that they want to switch to all-gaming programing, but they are really starting to suck.

Speed Up Firefox

Sarah Perez on June 4th, 2005

Firefox_7Tweaks, tweaks, I love me some tweaks. Here are some great ones that let you speed up your Firefox browser to go even faster than it does now. These tweaks are for broadband users only, though. (That’s everyone, right?)

Enter about:config in the address bar then change the following settings:

network.http.pipelining - set to "true"
network.http.proxy.pipeling - set to "true"
network.http.piplelining.maxrequests = set to "30"

Right click anywhere on the page, and select New | Integer. Type in "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" (sans quotes). Then enter 0 as the value. This one makes the pages render immediately, instead of waiting the default 250 ms.

Every little tweak helps!

Email Addiction

Sarah Perez on June 3rd, 2005

In an article about email addiction, I came across these figures:

26% say they don’t like going two or three days without access to e-mail
41% of respondents check e-mail first thing in the morning
23% check their e-mail in bed
4% say they read e-mail in the bathroom.

Do what? In the BATHROOM? Using their PDA while they go potties? Well, I guess it’s not really any worse than reading a ‘zine to pass the time. But for some reason, it seems ickier. Like people who have built-in gaming consoles by the toilet. I mean, really…

Gmail Users: Let your voices be heard!

Sarah Perez on June 1st, 2005

Gmail_5Did you know that you can suggest features for the Gmail team to implement? They have a whole list for you to choose from and even a box where you can type in your own suggestion. I have checked "Click a button to delete a message" four times now. Of course, you have enter your email address, so the last three probably didn’t count. So feel free to vote for that one…
