Olympians barred from Blogging

"The International Olympic Committee is barring competitors, as well as coaches, support personnel and other officials, from writing firsthand accounts for news and other Web sites. An exception is if an athlete has a personal Web site that they did not set up specifically for the Games." - from CNN
Is this a violation of free speech? And what exactly are they afraid of? I think a little behind-the-scenes personal commentary would be good publicity! I don’t get it…

Free speech is not always protected internationally. Nice to be American, isn’t it?

They say that it’s because everything about the Olympics belongs to the IOC. That’s the basis for it. I think it’s silly too. I’d LOVE to read a blog written by an athlete.

Well I worked for the Olympics in 2002 and everything is private. Interviews can only go through the IOC. The president of it is French - go figure… lol
