Picasa Image Organizer
Today, as I was Googling stuff, I came across this item on the Google tools page: Picasa. I have to say it’s pretty cool. It’s a image organizer program that’s free from Google. It’s not PhotoShop, sure, but look at all it has: it automatically organizes your photos for you, changes color to black & white, lets you e-mail, print, or order photolab prints, create a slideshow with music, import from your camera, search your photos using keywords, removes red-eye, has 1-click enhance, has cropping capabilities, supports .jpeg, .tiff, .bmp, psd, and .gif, has movie support, has support for network drives , and creates scalable thumbnails. My favorite feature, though, is the nifty timeline, that lets you browse all of your photos by date. No too bad for a little freebie, eh?

Censorzilla
Programmers will get a kick outta this! I saw this article in my Network Computing magazine:
When the developers at Mosaic Communications set out to create Mozilla, their lawyers requested that they clean the source code–literally. Developers were asked to remove “any text containing vulgar or offensive words or expressions.” Jamie Zawinski did just that–but, like any good programmer, he documented his work, preserving for your viewing pleasure the complete list of revolting source-code comments that never made it into Mozilla.
Some good ones:
/* This sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks. */
/* stderr hackery - Why Unix Sucks, reason number 32767
// we are f*****! try something different.
// blah blah I know too much about this s**t blah blah
This might not be such a good thing, as those colors might suck.
Unfortunately, it may screw up once in a while (nobody’s perfect)

Longhorn in 2006
It’s official: LONGHORN ARRIVES IN 2006! (Geez, isn’t that how long we have to wait for the next Harry Potter movie?!)
Western Digital 250 GB Hard Drive
Yes! I got a Western Digital 250 GB hard drive today! A bargain at Circuit City for only $149.99 (after rebates). Even though I could have done the whole fdisk, format, partition thing the hard way, the software included with this drive made all those steps unecessary. It was CAKE. The software copied my C: drive over to my new drive effortlessly and, when finished, there’s even a button to view the “installation manual,” which tells you, very specifically, how to swap the drives, change the jumpers, and access your BIOS (if need be). It’s even customized to your drives and refers to them by their model numbers. It was so easy, anyone could have done it. I feel like writing a thank-you letter to Western Digital for making this process such a simple and trouble-free event. I’m ecstatic right now! I can’t wait to fill this sucker up!
P2P Under attack
Viruses? Spammers? Phishing? Nah….what the Justice Department *really* cares about it catching those nasty Peer to Peer file sharing people:
Agents executed search warrants at residences and one Internet service provider in Texas, New York and Wisconsin. The warrants targeted the operators of five of the network’s “hubs,” rather than the individual users, and criminal charges are likely in the near future, according to the FBI. The hubs act as a central point for people granted membership to exchange copyrighted files, with some hubs containing data each day equivalent to 60,000 feature films. “The message is simply this: P2P or peer-to-peer does not stand for ‘permission to pilfer,’” Ashcroft told reporters. (From ABC News)
And that, my friends, is why I use Peer Guardian. Interestingly enough, the Peer Guardian website has closed, but the software is still out there for download.
Huh, what’s Peer Guardian?…..
Gmail Notifier
As an alternative to obsessively checking your Gmail account (as I did), the folks at Google have released the new Gmail Notifier. The cute little googly eyes sit down in your taskbar, obsessively checking your email for you. How I lived without this, I have no idea. Also, on the subject of Gmail, I have one more invite to give out. First come, first serve! Be the first to comment here and the invite is yours!
Banner Ads Online
How weird is this? Someone named Tari Akpodiete decided to start collecting banner ads and now has a whole website dedicated to her collection. It’s BannerReport.com, and I don’t see the appeal. But I guess it’s better than collecting porcelain cow figurines…
Olympians barred from Blogging
"The International Olympic Committee is barring competitors, as well as coaches, support personnel and other officials, from writing firsthand accounts for news and other Web sites. An exception is if an athlete has a personal Web site that they did not set up specifically for the Games." - from CNN
Is this a violation of free speech? And what exactly are they afraid of? I think a little behind-the-scenes personal commentary would be good publicity! I don’t get it…
Hardware Recycling
It’s time to let go of your 386 that you’ve convinced yourself you need for parts. You will *never* need that dial-up modem or motherboard again, I promise! Go recycle it at Office Depot anytime now through Labor Day!
